INTRODUCTION

I am so glad you came. I have wanted to show you, to tell you this story for so long. Take my hand and come with me. We’re going up there to get a better view. Don’t be nervous. I won’t let go.

Now, look down. Are you alright? I know we’re pretty high, but the view is so beautiful. Don’t worry. I promise I won’t   let go.

See that small group of lights? Yes, the ones reflected in the river. That is where it all takes place. That is Hex Hollow.

Of course you heard of it, you just don’t remember. It’s the place you heard of as a child. It was whispered to you in dreams and childhood fever’s. It’s a place you were promised you would get to see one day when you were older,  but you forgot about it along with the promise.  It’s very small and I’m afraid if we got closer, it really wouldn’t get much bigger.    But, it’s big inside.

What do I mean? You know. It’s full of things. It’s full of secrets, and love, yearnings and heartache. Mostly, though, it is full of magic. No, not that kind. Real magic. The kind you used to lay in your room and wish you could do with the wave of your fingertips or the will of just your heart.

Let’s go down a little closer. Look, you really need to trust me, okay? I told you I wouldn’t let go. I do know what I’m doing up here.

Yes, I told you it was small. The main street is only five blocks long, but look at it. Look how it curves along the river.  Then you have the canal that runs through the middle of town that parallels the river. Almost like they are all connected.  It’s an old place, though you would never know to look. The houses and shops, even the streetlamps are three or six times older than you. It may be the oldest town in southeastern Pennsylvania, but no one knows for sure. Why? Because so many people don’t even know it’s here and the ones that do forget about it when they leave. Okay. They don’t really forget. It just kind of lingers in their memories like the smell of the roses that bloom around their grandmother’s porch or the smell of mothballs in that old chest in the attic.

That large building on the end of town, there, with the porches, on each of its four floors is the Hex Hollow Tavern. It’s a hotel as well as a place where people come to meet, drink, eat, and listen. Why they listen to the music, of course. I’ll tell you more about that later.

There in the center of town, on that corner is the bakery. They make the most delicious butter cake. It melts on your tongue like honey. Yes, we’ll get some, just not right now.

That is the park, on the other end of town. It is full of more magic than you can imagine. See that? That’s a real wishing well. I don’t think you’ve seen one like this, no. This one actually grants wishes. Yes, it does. The only thing as old as the well is the Gazebo. That was one of the first things built here. The town would gather here and celebrate the..oh, I am getting ahead of myself.

The other buildings?  Oh, there are shops that offer almost anything you can imagine and things you have not even yet thought you could imagine. No two are the same. People come from everywhere to look and buy, to stock up and to just window shop. They wind up the hills and twist through one another’s streets. As many times as I have been here, I don’t think I have been to every one, yet.

Of course people live here. Some live in flats above the shops, others in homes between the shops. It’s like any other little town for appearances sake. But you know what they say about appearances, right?

Where? Oh, there. Those are homes, too. There are a few right on the edge of town. Which? Oh. Well, that big one belongs to Moyra McKie. She hardly looks a day over sixty-eight, but between you and me, she may be older than the Hollow itself. She is, how do I put this? She is where I will begin my story. How’s that?

Closer? Can’t you see enough from up here? You can see everything. And trust me, you will need to, to follow what I have to tell you, like the quarry on the hill there. Do you know what the quarry holds?

Well, if you really want to, but I think the lights look prettier from up here. Where? No. Ha, ha. No, those are not fireflies. Fireflies are smaller than that.

Look, I’m telling this story and you really ought to let me tell it my way. Just stay up here with me. Fine. Off you go then.

Oh, don’t look so shocked. Just relax your body and it won’t hurt so much when you land.

Yes. I know what I said.

I DIDN’T LET GO! I JUST GAVE YOU WHAT YOU WANTED!

  WHAT?

  THAT WAS RUDE!

YOU HAVE SOME SERIOUS TRUST ISSUES, YOU KNOW THAT?
I SAID…OH! WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!

  WHAT?

  WELL SAME TO YOU, ASSHOLE!

  Sigh.

  Oh, hello.

I am so glad you came. I have wanted to show you, to tell you this story for so long. Take my hand and come with me. We’re going up there to get a better view. Don’t be nervous. I won’t let go.

What? No, they’re fine. They just tried to rush me with my story. You’re not in a hurry, are you? Are you sure? Good.

You’re not afraid of heights, are you?
This the intro for my novel, "The Heart Of Hex Hollow". To be honest, it's a love story, but there is so much going on and involved with it that doesn't fit the romantic category, I snuck it in here.

I'm not sure what to put here. How much do I give away? Do I give away anything at all? You tell me.

Or, you can just take my hand and come with me. Let me tell you this tale. It may hurt at times. You may laugh at others. In some places you may scratch your head or want to run. Take my hand anyway. Trust me. I promise, I won't let go.
